Bloomberg’s google-centers-ai-in-tech-news-2/">new-pixel-devices/">Caroline Hyde sits down with Google senior vice president of platforms and devices to discuss the latest slate of Google gadgets and the new lineup displays the company’s advancements in artificial intelligence.
Alphabet Inc.’s Google introduced a new slate of consumer gadgets on Wednesday, including several smartphones, a watch and new wireless earbuds, all meant to show off the company’s latest advances in artificial intelligence.
The phone lineup consists of the Pixel 10 ($800), Pixel 10 Pro ($1,000), Pixel 10 Pro XL ($1,200)and Pixel 10 Pro Fold ($1,800). The Pixel Watch 4 costs $350 for its smaller 41mm size and $400for the 45mm model. And the company’s latest budget earbuds, the Pixel Buds 2a, will run $130. Most of the phones have the samestarting price astheirdirect predecessors except for the XL, which now comes with double the storage.
Across the board, Google is more deeply integrating its Gemini AI assistant —a platform it’sgrown confident inafter initially having to catch up with ChatGPT developer OpenAI. Googlewent as far to taunt rivalApple Inc.in recent weeks byreleasing adsthat alluded to the iPhone maker’sdelayed Siri revamp. Apple has long dwarfed the search giant when it comes to smartphone sales, but with Google’s“ask more of your phone” tagline for the Pixel 10 lineup, it’s taking a victory lap againstApple, which will unveil new hardware of its own in September.
Notably, however, while the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Proand Pixel 10 Pro XL will be available in storesthis month, Google is holding back the release of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel Watch 4and Pixel Buds 2a until October. This means the newphones will be on shelves for several weeks before the smartwatch that’s meant to be paired with them, and Google’s latest foldable likely won’t be ready until after Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup begins shipping.
Gemini Everywhere
Google is determined to position its Gemini AI as something more advanced than a chatbot or voice assistant. With the Pixel 10, AI is interspersed across the system and is designed to be more proactive. This effort is led by two newfeatures — Magic Cue and Camera Coach —both of which are available on all four models of the Pixel 10 series.
Magic Cue is designed to provide helpful, contextual suggestions at the right moments, according to Google. In cases where it can’t find the right thing forwhatever you’re doing, the feature won’t activate. Users are also free to disable it entirely.
If you call a hotel where you’ve already made reservations, for example, the Pixel 10’s phone app will helpfully display those details without making you go hunting for them. If a friend texts you asking for a reminder of where you’ve booked dinner, the Messages app will pull info from Gmail, Google Calendarand other apps to suggest automatic replies with the right details. If someone requests photos from a recent trip, Magic Cue will automatically surface the right images in Google Photos.
Thecamera app is also getting its biggest AI infusion yet. Camera Coach canoffer ideas for different ways of composing a photo and use generative AI to preview what each approach might look like. This all happens in real time, with suggestions changing based on the scene or subject. If you’re shooting food, for instance, Camera Coach will likely recommend an overhead shot. It will also remind you to avoid window frames and other distractions if you’re photographing a cityscape or sunset from indoors.
Pixel 10
Aside from vibrant new color optionslike “indigo” and “lemongrass,” the Pixel 10 looks a lot like last year’s Pixel 9. The biggest exterior change can be found in the camera area, where the Pixel 10gainsa telephoto zoom lens —a perk previously reserved for Google’s Pro models. It also has more conventional regular and ultra-wide cameras. The new lensoffers 5x optical zoom for getting more detailed shots of subjects at a distance.
However, one tradeoff for this added versatility is that the primary “wide” camera on the standard Pixel 10is no longer of the same quality as its equivalent on the Pixel 10 Pro.
